Our Management Team

Catherina Bertaina
Catherina BertainaPresident

Catherina Bertaina founded Colonial Home Care Services in 1992. Having worked for another agency with less than ethical practices, she knew she had no choice but to start her own business in order to provide care with dignity and respect. “I feel these qualities are conveyed to our clients in the same way I interact with my family,” says Catherina. As a mother of 3, grandmother of 2, and primary caregiver for her 88-year-old Dad who has lived with her for nearly 6 years, Cathrina says, “I was born to care for others.”

Colonial Home Care Services has been in business for nearly 30 years. Providing an excellent caliber of service is our ultimate goal. Contributing to the peace of mind of our clients and their families is only possible because we are a close-knit community of caregivers and administrative staff. At Colonial Home Care Services, we only hire state-certified, experienced, and well-trained employees to care for your loved ones.

Laurie Bertao
Laurie BertaoScheduling Coordinator

Laurie Berteo works as one of the Scheduling Coordinators at Colonial Home Care Services. Laurie showed an interest in caring for others at the early age of 16 when she began volunteering at a nursing home in Texas. Laurie then went on to pursue a career in the medical field as a phlebotomy nurse.  With over 30 years of experience, Laurie has proven herself to be an invaluable asset to the Colonial Home Care Services family.

Anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Laurie can attest to the care and concern she shows to each and every one of our clients. She loves visiting clients in their homes and is always ready and willing to provide helpful information and answer questions. Laurie loves spending time with her partner of over 4 years and the love of her life, George and her dogs Marley (our office mascot), and Wally (aka Sir Barks A Lot).

Yesenia Chavez
Yesenia ChavezScheduling Coordinator

As Scheduling Coordinator, Yesenia is responsible for making sure our clients are properly staffed with the right caregiver and that both our clients and caregivers are happy with one another. Caregiving comes naturally to Yesenia, as a mother of 4 beautiful children (and one furry feline), Yesenia is always there to lend a listening ear and offer advice and support whenever she can.

She loves to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle and she is always encouraging those around her to do the same. Yesenia finds great enjoyment by being an advocate of both our caregivers and clients and she loves helping our clients by orchestrating the assistance our caring staff provides.

State Licensing

All home care providers in the State of California are now required to be licensed by the Department of Social Services, Home Care Services Bureau. Licensing ensures a minimum standard of care and state oversight, for the protection of clients served. State licensing for home care requires the following:

  • Livescan criminal background clearance through the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation for all employees
  • Home Care Aides registered with the state
  • Initial and annual training for Home Care Aides
  • TB testing for Home Care Aides every two years
  • General and Professional Liability Insurance coverage to $1,000,000 per occurrence, $3,000,000 aggregate
  • Workers Compensation insurance to $1,000,000
  • Surety bonding of at least $25,000
  • Policies and procedures for elder abuse reporting
  • Compliance with applicable labor laws
Senior Care Orange County

Several home care companies still operate without being licensed by the state, which is a violation of the law.  Licensing and its requirements are costly, and some companies attempt to skirt the law by classifying their workers as “Independent Contractors.”  Clients who receive care from an Independent Contractor-based company are put at significant risk for liabilities such as workplace injuries, payroll taxes, and more.
